Health insurance for foreign Au-pairs in Germany

health insurance aupair germany

The term “Au pair” comes from the French and means: “in reciprocity”. Foreign au-pairs are taken in by the German host family and in return take care of the children and help with the housework. As a ‘family member for a time” they learn about the people, the culture and the German language close-up.

Eligible group

Au-pairs from across the world coming to Germany and doing that work for at most one year can be insured. The minimum age for au-pairs is 18, the maximum age is 27 at the time of applying for the visa. Definitive is the commencement of employment.

Legal basics about health insurance for Au-pairs in Germany

The principles of the au-pair regime are governed in the “European Convention on Au-pair Employment” of 24.11.1969, from which the rights and duties of the host family and the au-pair are derived. One duty of the host parents is to provide for adequate health, liability and accident insurance for their protégé. Au-pairs in Germany are not subject to the German social security requirements. They can therefore choose between private travel insurance products usually offered by German providers / insurers. You can find recommended providers of au-pair insurance under the menu item Partners.

After entering the country and before reaching the age of 27, an EU work permit must be applied for with the relevant Job Centre of the Bundesagentur für Arbeit. In the case of non-EU nationals, this takes place within the context of applying for a visa.

Insurance advice

Au-pairs from other European countries often bring limited health insurance cover with them from their home country, but taking out additional insurance in Germany often makes sense and is advisable for the host family for liability reasons in particular. We recommend the au-pair tariffs of our partner Care Concept AG. The specialist for au-pair insurance offers optimum insurance cover from as little as €21.00 per month. With three different tariff variants, HanseMerkur also offers good insurance cover for au-pairs. In all tariff variants, HanseMerkur waives any deductible. The usual billing rate of the GOÄ /GOZ will be reimbursed at a rate of 2.3. With both companies you get additional liability and accident cover, conclusion of which is also one of the duties of the host parents. The personal liability insurance serves to secure personal, property damage and deportation costs whilst the accident insurance covers risks such as invalidity and death.
