An au pair is a person in the age of 18 to 30 years, who decides to go abroad to live and work with a host family. The field of activity of an au pair generally consists of childcare and simple housework. The aim of an au pair stay in France is to get to know a foreign culture, learn the language of the host country and how to deal with children. In return for their work, au pairs receive their own room, free food and pocket money. The duration of an au pair stay in France is usually six to twelve months.

To enable you to work as an au pair in France, you need a signed employment contract. Only with a signed employment contract you will receive a residence permit.

If you come to France for an au pair stay from a country outside of the EU, you are not insured through the statutory health insurance in your home country.

Au pairs in France from an EU country

If you come for an au pair stay in France from an EU member state, your statutory health insurance will usually apply throughout Europe. You only need to apply for a "European health insurance card". This way, you will be insured during your au pair stay in France for emergency treatment. Please note that return transport to your home country is not included in this insurance. Health insurances typically only assume the costs the insurances in the respective country reimburse. If you have a statutory health insurance from your home country you must pay deductibles and copayments that are common abroad from your own funds.

If you want to spend more than half a year in France as an au pair, and if you have received a work permit for this, you are automatically registered with the French social insurance and you are insured through your host family. This means that you can use all the basic benefits of the French health insurance. You still must pay deductibles and copayments that are common abroad from your own funds.
